Work Packages - What is a Work Package and How to Create One

When working in a complex work breakdown structure (multiple levels, several dependencies, and several supporting projects running in parallel), you will likely need to schedule deliverables from across several supporting projects. You can now pull all of those deliverables into a single "wrapper" project which we call a "Work Package." It captures everything you want to get done in the next quarter of the entire project. Creating work packages is essential so you know exactly what is getting done in the next 90 days across the entire complex work breakdown.
In your work breakdown...
  1. Use the multi-select function and select all the deliverables you want to group into work package.
  2. In the multi-select toolbar menu, find Create Work Package, it may be in the three-dot "more options" menu
  3. Click Create Work Package

Fill out the standard project form and leave the Work Package option checked.

When you save the work package, it will be added to your work breakdown structure. To distinguish it from the rest of your deliverables, work packages have an orange marker on the top.

To see which deliverables from the larger work breakdown structure are included in this work package...
  1. Click the three-dot row menu for the work package
  2. Select Highlight Children

When you do, all of the deliverables that are included in that work breakdown will be highlighted. The highlights will disappear once you navigate away from this screen.

This specific work package was assigned to Susan. It is now in her To-Do list. When she opens the Breakdown for the work package, she only sees the sub-set of items selected from the large work breakdown structure. Any updates she makes to these items will update the items in the larger work breakdown at the same time.
